Florida Industrial School for Boys-Capital Plaza Site

Dozier Part 2 2.jpeg.opt650x434o0,0s650x434.jpeg

This memorial honors the boys who suffered abuse at the Florida Industrial School for Boys, also known as the Dozier School for Boys, in Marianna, Florida. The installation will be placed at Capital Plaza in Tallahassee upon completion of the site.

The sculpture group depicts three boyssymbolizing innocence, endurance, and unityat a moment of shared pain and resilience. The center boy has just been beaten, supported by two others. Beside them stands a life-size figure of “Joe,” representing one of the survivors who personally identified himself among the victims. The plaque in his hand reads, “Hi, I’m Joe. That’s me up there in the middle when I was 12.”

This deeply human work by Franco Castelluccio serves as a permanent reminder of the injustices faced by the boys at Dozier and the strength of those who came forward to tell their stories. The memorial figures have been sculpted and are currently in the foundry, awaiting final installation once the site is ready.
